Notes

AFAOA Project Case #20
DAWES CARD MCR2843 Mississippi Choctaw Rejected. Refused Feb 13, 1903 office Meridian, MS. Application by the wife of J. B. Austin. Her name was Edna M. Austin age 29. Residence was Nittayuma, MS near Vicksburg, MS. Her testimony was dated July 2, 1901. Her parents were John M. Rogers, non-citizen and Lucinda M. Rogers, who claims Choctaw. Edna said her mother was 1/4 Choctaw. Edna's grandfather was Frank Womack, a Choctaw. Pushamanta and Tandy Walker were his cousins.
Edna said her husband, J. B. Austin was white and part German.
Edna's children were Edna M. Austin, daughter age 3. She was 1/16 blood Choctaw.
Rogers V. Austin, son, age 1 1/2 yrs. was 1/16 blood Choctaw as a descendant of Choctaw, Frank Womack and wife, Annie.

NAME: Note by Helen C Austin. The DAWES report has his name as J. B. Austin. Considering that the name was recorded by a clerk from the oral testimony of his wife, a mistake of the sound-alike initial is possible. The census records and marriage record for the husband of Edna M Rogers Austin show that his true name was Jacob V. Austin. The middle initial stands for Vastine, as his son has a middle initial V that also stands for Vastine, according to the WWIDraft Card dated 9-12-1918.
