VOLUNTEER

If you are interested in genealogy, the preservation of Austin family history and the future of AFAOA, then please consider this request. It would be a good way to get involved with the workings of a great organization, and perform an essential and appreciated service. For more information on volunteering, reach out to our AFAOA Volunteer Coordinator.

Database Editors

We are very short of people to serve as Editors. We have 70 databases currently being serviced by 11 Editors. One editor is responsible for 20 databases, one is responsible for 9 databases. The rest are spread among the remaining 9 Editors. We need more volunteers to pick up one or more additional databases.

Historically, the best person to be an editor is an Austin researcher that has assembled a record of his or her Austin family. You should be well practiced in research, documentation, and history of this family. Your main task is to accept or reject inputs received from people using our website, and to answer queries about this database. You will also attempt to provide corrections or additions, or identify mistakes in the database, which helps to keep it current.

The functions of an Editor include: serving as custodian of the database, answering queries, and making verified on-line additions and corrections. Some on-line research might be required–using census records, Find-a-Grave or Family History pages, etc. People skills and some basic familiarization with the TNG software program will be needed and can be easily learned. An AFAOA handbook for Editors is available to be your guide. You will learn by doing. An effort level of about three hours per week is anticipated… a bit more should you volunteer for multiple databases.

Newsletter Team

Our Newsletter Team could use another person or two. We publish our newsletter three or four times per year.

Assistant Webmaster

Our webmaster needs help! We run two different websites, a Wordpress-style membership site and a genealogy database that uses the TNG software package. We could use help with both sites; training will be provided.
