About Our Database

Historically, AFAOA maintained separate databases ("trees") for each documented lineage back to an Austin immigrant to America.  Established genealogies without a link to an immigrant Austin progenitor are collected into three "Unplaced" databases with the hope that linkage back to an immigrant progenitor can someday be established.  There are currently 68 Austin databases numbering over 151,000 genealogically linked Austins.

We have traditionally grouped our databases into Northern and Southern categories, based roughly on the Mason-Dixon line.  There are 43 Northern and 21 Southern databases.  The Native American Austins database is a special case, a collection containing 27 smaller genealogies which represent Native American families bearing the surname Austin.

Each of our databases has an editor assigned to it.  Our databases are continually updated and corrected by research by our genealogists or editors, or by suggestions emailed from researchers investigating their Austin lines.  All of the data in all of our databases is available without cost to the public for non-commercial use.

The search function of our software can search all of our databases at the same time, or one database at a time.  For best results,  simply use the search function in the Find dropdown menu to enter the name you are researching.  You can then use the advanced search features to narrow your search, if needed.

Here is our complete list of trees with their progenitors:

Robert Austin of Kingston, Washington Co., Rhode Island In the preface of Edith Austin Moore's book "A Genealogy of the Descendants of Robert Austin of Kingstown, Rhode Island" Moore states, "Judge John Osborne Austin of Providence, Rhode Island, has given us the first four generations of the descendants of Robert Austin in his 'Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island.'" Judge Austin's genealogy lists 4 sons of Robert, Edward, Jeremiah, Joseph and John. DNA testing of three of the four son's lines, attributed to Robert, have come back with matching DNA making it likely that they had a common father. The belief that this was Robert is well founded.
